A Rich History of Kingsbarn Golf Links
Early Beginnings in Golf
Golf has been played in Kingsbarns since 1793, when the Kingsbarns Golfing Society was inaugurated.
The Society’s members, easily recognized by their blue jackets, met for their spring and autumn meetings on the Kingsbarns golf course.
This custom was continued until 1850, when the tenant farmer of Cambo Estate ploughed the links up to grow crops. Nevertheless, the golfing spirit survived at Kingsbarns.
Revival and Growth
Kingsbarns was re-established in 1922 by Lady Erskine of Cambo. Assisted by the designer Willie Auchterlonie, they created a new nine-hole course which satisfied local inhabitants and was also attractive to tourists.
But World War II ushered in another pause, with the course mined for national defence. Following the war, the course was closed until the early 21st century.

Course Layout & Design at Kingsbarns Golf Links

Kingsbarns Golf Links is a Kyle Phillips-designed course that combines a fantastic traditional links design and the very best modern features.
The layout tests players of every ability, offering generous fairways for aggressive tee shots while requiring precision in approach shots to greens that run fast and firm and are protected by nasty bunkers.
The layout is thoughtfully crafted to test golfers of every skill level while keeping them interested and asking for more.
Wide Fairways and Large Greens
An outstanding feature at Kingsbarns is the size of the fairways. These generously wide and forgiving fairways inspire confidence off the tee and make the golf course playable for all levels of golfers.
But the huge, undulating greens demand precision on approaches and a sharp short game. The features of the design are those of the coast itself: the dunes and the winds all combine to keep even the most experienced player off balance.
Seaside Views
The most spectacular thing about the course is probably the stunning coastal location.
Virtually every hole has breathtaking views of the North Sea, the rugged shoreline providing a beautiful setting. Down to the beach and in with the sea breeze awash with waves, the sound of the sea and the fresh sea air set the scene for golf at Kingsbarns Golf Links.
Notable Holes at Kingsbarns Golf Links
First Four Holes (Introductory Challenge)
The first four holes at Kings Barns Golf are set among substantial dunes, providing a gentle introduction to the course. Strategic shots rather than length are the order of the day on these holes, which offer fantastically panoramic vistas around the coast from elevated tees.
The natural attractiveness of Kingsbarns, together with the challenge of the dunes, makes these opening holes an exhilarating introduction.
The 5th Hole (Par 4, “The Ocean Hole”)
The 5th hole at Kingsbarns is one of the most unforgettable, referred to as “The Ocean Hole”. This par 4 provides stunning ocean views from the tee. However, the green can be tricked into getting there, taking one through the coastal winds and natural dune, a tantalizing yet unrewarding hole.
It is also one of the most photographed spots on the course.
12th Hole (Par 5)
The 12th hole at Kings Barnes is a terrific par 5 that runs along the ocean. The wind and water hazards on the left challenge the wide fairway. A visual beauty with a tough route to the hole, it is one of the most iconic holes at Kingsbarns.
15th Hole (Par 3, Signature Hole)
Golfers usually call the 15th hole the signature gem of Kingsbarns. This long par three demands a nerve-racking carry over the sea, with angry surf below and jagged rocks lurking left. The stunning scene and tough shot combine to make it a top memory for almost every visitor.
18th Hole (Finish with Challenge)
The 18th hole at Kingsbarns is a gentle par 4 that invites players to swing freely, so many expect an easy finish. Yet deep fairway bunkers and the subtle slope near the cup demand respect, turning the last approach into a small test of skill and nerve.
Kingsbarns vs. Other Top Scottish Courses
Comparison to St Andrews
Blessed with the routing of St Andrews, modern-era Kingsbarns lacks St Andrews’s historical significance but not its ocean views.
In contrast to the ancient links courses, Kingsbarns arguably provides the most open of all links layouts in Scotland. There are stunning coastal views from every hole, making golfing a whole new experience.
Modern Features with Traditional Roots
Kingsbarns is unique as it combines modern design elements with the characteristics of Scottish golf.
This has created an integration where there is a visually spectacular course but a challenging one, bringing the best of both modern design and classic links features.
But Kingsbarns, in contrast to the older courses, is accessible to both serious and novice links golfers and enjoyable for all. The result is an engaging round of golf that takes pride of place among Scotland’s best golfing destinations.
