Dundonald Golf Links

If you are a golf enthusiast, you may have heard of the Dundonald Links Course. This Scottish golf course, located near the town of Troon in Ayrshire, Scotland, is a relatively new addition to the world of golf.

However, it has quickly established itself as a must-visit destination for any avid golfer and must be considered one of the top 30 golf courses in Scotland. In this article, we will take a comprehensive look at all aspects of the Dundonald Links Course, from its history and design to the playing experience and amenities.

Prestwick Golf Club

Prestwick Old Course is without a doubt one of the most famous ‘Old Links’ courses in the world and a must for golf in the west coast of Scotland. The Championship Links has been extended throughout the years since it hosted the first Open Championship back in 1860.

Back then the tournament was played on a 12 hole course. The Par 71 now plays just under 7’000 yds and is traditionally a links course as you’ll play. You’ll encounter a few blind shots along your round and negotiate undulating fairways some would refer to as an ‘Elephants Graveyard’. Furthermore, you will find some exceptional bunkering and finally fast and firm greens.

Royal Troon Golf Club

Royal Troon Golf Club

A 9-time venue of The Open Championship dating back to 1923. Royal Troon is amongst the legendary golf courses in the world. It was the venue to what was certainly one of the greatest final Open Championship rounds of all time. It was in 2016 where Henrik Stenson piped Phil Mickelson to the Claret Jug by shooting 63 to Phil’s 65. At over 7000 yds from the Championship tees, this Par 71 has a great mix of risk and reward holes. As a result, a number of holes demand great golf shots. Royal Troon is home to one of the most famous Par 3’s in Golf the ‘Postage Stamp’.

Portland Course

Although a links course like the Old Course at Royal Troon, the Portland Course is more sheltered, providing some protection for the golfer as they meander through the terrain filled with gorse and broom. With 5 par 3’s the Portland is a shorter course however it makes up the yardage on the back nine with 4 par 5’s. The course was originally designed by the Troon professional and winner of the Open Championship in 1883, William Fernie. In the early 1920’s it was re-designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie.

Trump Turnberry Ailsa Golf Course

Located 25 miles south of Troon, Ayrshire holds another spectacular Open Championship venue at Turnberry. The Ailsa Course has hosted The Open on 4 occasions, most notably in 1977 where Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson. Both players went head to head in the famous ‘Duel in the Sun’. In 2014 the Trump Organisation took over the resort and had Mackezie & Ebert architects redesign the course. They created 5 new holes – a masterpiece! A true golfing paradise, Ailsa is one of the most picturesque courses you will play in the west coast of Scotland.

King Robert The Brucae Course

A new golfing experience at Trump Turnberry, The King Robert The Bruce Course opened on 11th July 2017, the birthday of Robert The Bruce. The King of Scotland, born in Turnberry Castle, led Scotland to claims its right as an independent country in the battle of Bannockburn in 1314.

The exciting new addition at Turnberry designed by Martin Ebert (who was also responsible for re-creation of the Ailsa Course) thrills golfers of all abilities with its distinctive bunkering, wetland areas, swathes of gorse and not forgetting to mention those spectacular views of the coastline, Turnberry castle ruins and the famous lighthouse.
