The 520 acre five star Fairmont Resort encapsulates luxury, elegance and truly breath-taking surroundings in the ‘Home of Golf’. It is a unique and special venue with its peaceful setting and stunning cliff-top views of St Andrews and the North Sea. Above all the resort prides itself on an array of fantastic facilities including two world-class championship golf courses, the Torrance and the Kittocks.
A Brief History of Fairmont St Andrews
The Fairmont Hotel and its two courses, The Torrance and the Kittocks, are located just outside of the town. The original two courses, the Torrance and Devlin, were inaugurated in 2001 and 2002, respectively, and were the idea of American real estate tycoon Don Panoz. The golf courses have changed significantly over the years. The Torrance course now includes holes from the Devlin course, and additional bunker work and irrigation have been done. The Torrance course had a renovation in 2009 to include eight additional holes in time for the 2009 Scottish Seniors Open. It also served as the Final Qualifying Venue for the 2010 Open Golf Championship. That was when the Devlin course also changed its name. The SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) section of land on the course, which is home to a family of deer, is where the name Kittocks originates.
Course Design at Fairmont St Andrews
The Torrance course, named after its designer Sam Torrance, is a par 72 course that measures 7,230 yards from the back tees. It features a traditional Scottish links-style design and many holes are superbly protected by strategically placed bunkering, undulating horizon greens and clever run-off areas. Players who do want to take the risk will have to have many golf shots in their armoury to score well. The course offers stunning views of the North Sea and the medieval town of St Andrews.
The Kittocks course, designed by Bruce Devlin and Gene Sarazen, is a par 72 course that measures 7,192 yards from the back tees. The course features a combination of links and parkland styles, with dramatic elevation changes and stunning panoramic views of St Andrews Bay. The course also includes a couple of man-made lakes that the course navigates its way around. Before you are then faced with some magnificent views across the Eden Estuary and the ‘Auld Grey Toun'.
