Golf enthusiasts looking for a world-class golfing experience in Scotland should look no further than Archerfield Links. Located in East Lothian, just a short drive from Edinburgh, Archerfield Links is one of Scotland's premier golf destinations. Here we'll provide you with an extensive guide to Archerfield , covering all the details you need to know before planning your trip.

A Brief History of Archerfield Links Scotland

For centuries golf has been played at Archerfield. However, the course was only extended to an 18-hole layout shortly before the 1st World War by local pro Ben Sayers. Archerfield Links is a relatively new golf course, having opened in 2004.

The course was designed by renowned golf course architect, DJ Russell, and is located on a 550-acre estate that has been in the same family for over 400 years. The course was built with sustainability in mind, and the team at Archerfield Links has worked hard to maintain the natural beauty of the area while also creating a world-class golfing experience.

After laying dormant for many years Archerfield developed into a 1st class golfing venue with a luxurious clubhouse, state-of-the-art practice facilities and 2 loops of 18-hole championship courses, the Fidra and Direlton. Did you know? Dirleton has hosted top European professional golf. For example, The Ladies Scottish Open, Scottish Senior Open and The Paul Lawrie Matchplay.

Course Design at Direlton

It is home to two 18-hole courses, the Fidra Course and the Dirleton Course, both designed by DJ Russell. Direlton plays more like a traditional link due to the lack of trees. There are also rolling dunes, gorse bushes, and billiard table-like greens that host a number of subtle run-offs for miscalculated shots. The course can vary in length from 5’500 yds to just under 7’000 yds depending on what tees you wish to play off. With over 60 sand traps players also need to be pretty accurate during a round here. From the 3rd you can spot the atmospheric ruins of Dirleton Castle looming in the distance.

Course Design at Fidra

The Fidra Course, named after the island in the Firth of Forth that can be seen from the course, is a traditional links-style course with rolling fairways and well-protected greens. The course measures 6,927 yards from the championship tees and offers a mix of long and short holes that will test golfers of all abilities. Most of the early holes are particularly defined by towering pine trees down either sides of the fairways. Consequently, this can play havoc with wind direction and club selection. After navigating through the woodland area the course really opens out into a more traditional links style of play. The Fidra Links is truly an enjoyable and picturesque place to play golf in East Lothian.
