A Brief History of Trump Turnberry Ailsa Golf Course

The site of the Trump Turnberry Resort has a rich history dating back to the 1800s when it was a simple cottage owned by the wealthy Scottish family, the Cassillis Estate. The land was then turned into a hotel, and the first golf course was constructed there in 1906. The course was redesigned in the 1950s by renowned golf course architect Mackenzie Ross, and in 2016, the course underwent a major renovation by renowned golf course architect Martin Ebert.

The course features several signature holes, including the par-3 9th, which is played over the rocky shoreline, and the par-4 10th, known as the “Duel in the Sun” hole, where Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus battled for the 1977 Open Championship.

The Kintyre Course is a par-72 course that measures 7,222 yards from the championship tees. Designed by Donald Steel, the course is situated on the hills behind the hotel, offering stunning views of the Ailsa Course and the Firth of Clyde.
