Craigielaw is one of the newer courses to Scotland's Golf Coast in East Lothian. It is home to a stunning 18-hole championship golf course located in the beautiful East Lothian countryside, just outside the historic town of Aberlady. The club's wonderfully built course, cutting-edge amenities, and excellent hospitality have helped it become one of Scotland's most well-known golf destinations. Craigielaw is also surrounded by an additional 22 golf courses. Famous greats like Muirfield, North Berwick, and Gullane are among these nearby courses.
A Brief History of Craigielaw Golf Club
The Donald Steel & Co. designed course was opened in 2001 and has since increased its reputation by playing host to a number of national competitions, including the 2006 Scottish Amateur Strokeplay Championship and The Scottish Senior Open, which was won by Gary Orr in 2018. It was also a qualifying course for the 2007 British Seniors Open at Muirfield.
Course Design at Craigielaw Golf Club
This is a difficult 18-hole championship course that provides a stern test for even the longest hitters. In particular, the many cavernous bunkers and tricky tabletop greens make all players think twice about their shot selections.
With a par of 71 and a length of 6,601 yards, the back nine features a strong run of holes that begin at the downhill, 540-yard par five 11th hole called "Quarry Park" and concludes with the long, 467-yard par four 16th hole called "Kirk Park."
Although sometimes light and wispy, the rough may be challenging, and well-placed bunkers—both fairway and greenside—present a difficult array of challenges on many holes. The greens are quick and true despite being solid, difficult to control, and often undulating. When meandering burns and old stone dykes are incorporated into the layout, you have a course that will appeal to even the most demanding golf traditionalist!
Facilities and Amenities at Craigielaw Golf Club
The club also offers great practice facilities including a grass academy practice ground and driving range. Furthermore, there is a 6-hole par 3 course named The South Links designed by Donald Steele & Co. which gives Craigielaw members of all ages an area to practice their short game and understand the rules and etiquette in a quiet and enjoyable environment.
There is also a short game area and a practice putting green – ideal for warming up before your round. With 6500 square meters of teeing area, and practice bunkers and mounds similar to those found on the course, golfers have the opportunity to fine-tune the part of their game that needs improving.
The Academy is run by their Director of Golf Jonathan Porteous. Jonathan and the Pro Shop team are on hand to give advice on practising effectively and coaching options.
Talking of the pro shop there is a fully stocked Professional Shop with a wide range of clubs and clothing and here the team can help organise your Titleist club hire if needed, arrange trolleys, golf carts and caddies if you desire them. Craigielaw also has a Titleist National Fitting Studio so you can treat yourself to some new clubs too!
