A Brief History of Gailes Links Golf Course
The Glasgow Golf Club, Gailes Links, was established in 1787 and is the ninth oldest golf club in the world. Designed by Willie Fernie, the club originally played on Glasgow Green before moving to Alexandra Park in the east end of Glasgow. The current course, Gailes Links, was opened in 1912 and re-designed by Willie Park Jr, a two-time winner of the Open Championship. These two have put their names to some of the greatest courses in the world!
Since then, the course has undergone several improvements and renovations while maintaining its traditional links-style layout.
Since 1973, Gailes Links has served as a final qualifying venue for the Open Championship. In addition, it has hosted events like The Home Internationals, the Europe v. USA Palmer Trophy, the Scottish PGA Championship, the Scottish Amateur Championship, and the Scottish Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship to name but a few. To gain membership at Glasgow Golf Club, Gailes Links you require a proposal by a current member which needs to be seconded by another member. This application has to be supported by a further 6 members and you would be placed on a waiting list for the sister course at Killermontin Bearsden also.
